Easy Chocolate Pecan Vegan Phyllo Dough Turnovers

Lightly coated in cinnamon sugar and wrapped in flaky phyllo dough, these vegan chocolate pecan turnovers are a perfectly cozy way to enjoy the Holidays this year. Easy to make and minimal ingredients, these turnovers will quickly become one of your family favorite phyllo dough recipes.

What is phyllo dough?

Phyllo dough or filo is a delicate and paper thin dough used for making pastries in Greek, Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisines. Phyllo dough recipes are made by layering many sheets of dough lightly brushed with oil or butter.

Is phyllo dough the same as puff pastry?

Phyllo dough and puff pastry are very different being that phyllo dough has almost no fat and can dry out rather easily. Puff pastry has a fluffy, airy quality while phyllo dough is delicate, crisp and flaky.

Is phyllo dough vegan? YEP! I like to use Athen’s Phyllo Dough because I know for sure it’s 100% vegan. It’s also super easy to find at most grocery stores.

Is phyllo dough gluten free? The brand I use most often is not gluten free and I’ve found it difficult to find gluten-free phyllo dough. You might try finding gluten free phyllo dough at Whole Foods.

How to make vegan chocolate pecan turnovers

You’ll be relieved to know that these turnovers are easy to make using minimal ingredients.

Here’s what you need to them–

  • phyllo dough
  • coconut sugar- or you can use organic brown sugar
  • maple syrup
  • cinnamon
  • salt
  • room temperature vegan butter – separated
  • chopped pecans – lightly toasted in a pan
  • vegan chocolate chips
  • organic cane sugar

That’s it!

Simple, right?

Start by pre-heating the oven to 375 F and preparing a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a bowl, cream together the coconut sugar and room temperature butter. Stir in the toasted pecans (mine were still warm at this point), maple syrup, cinnamon, salt and chocolate chips. It’s okay if some of the chips melt slightly.

Next, melt the remaining butter and on a clean work surface, place three sheets of phyllo dough, covering the other dough lightly with a damp paper towel so they don’t dry out. Cut the sheets in half length wise.

Lightly brush some melted butter between the sheets and then generously over the top of the sheets.

Spoon roughly 1 1/2 heaping tablespoons of filling onto the end of the dough leaving roughly a half inch of room to the edge. Fold into a triangle. Keep folding the dough over itself to form a triangle until you get to the end of the sheets. Bake turnovers until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.

Brush with melted butter and toss in cinnamon sugar before serving.
